Many people wonder if it's not frightening to live at the foot of a volcano. An active volcano, at that. And the highest in Europe, to further specify. The truth is, those of us who've grown up with Mt. Etna get used to it. We from Catania, who know it well, are aware that Etna's not male, or a "vulcano" (a masculine word in Italian). Rather, it's female, or as we usually call it, a "muntagna" (a feminine word in Sicilian dialect).
