The Venetian Lagoon divides up into two parts, the Northern and Southern Lagoon. Both areas are dotted with islands, large and small. Many of these islands are now uninhabited and abandoned, but they still offer a strong sense of Venetian history. I sometimes have a chance to go and visit a friend who bought a house on one of these islands in the Northern Lagoon called Torcello.
Venice was created out of water and marble, but no element in the world says Venice more than glass –and Perle e Dintorni is there to testify! The skilled maestri del vetro blow the liquid material into colourful objects and beads, filling the shop with everything you'll ever need to create your own Venetian piece of jewellery as well as a selection of wearable glass art in the form of pendants, bracelets, earrings and necklaces.
All along the race course, Venetians and tourists enjoy the colourful parade of boats and their crews, who are often dressed in zany and unusual costumes. Everyone enjoys this festive day. It's not to be missed should you find yourself in Venice when it's held.
