It's difficult to wander around Venice as a tourist without running into picturesque spots whose beauty and singular charm takes your breath away. But, if you have a curious and careful eye, you can find new, less common ways of seeing the city from on high or on the water.
In November, the traditional month of "high waters" when many roads were flooded, you would see men going about with high rubber boots. For a few coins, they would carry people on their backs, taking them from one dry spot to another, or transport passengers in the carts used to carry goods and crates of fruits and vegetables.
Each season in Venice offers surprises. Some you can encounter whilst wandering through the “calli” (Venetian alleys) and discovering unusual places, others are, so to speak, under the surface of the city and, sometimes, rather peculiar.
