VOLOTEA WINS “LEADING EUROPEAN LOW-COST AIRLINE” AWARD AT THE WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS 2021

The World Travel Awards are the travel industry's most prestigious awards programme, rewarding leaders in the tourism business. Its goal is to acknowledge and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.

The recognition comes at a time when, despite major challenges for the airline industry, the airline has managed to excel in meeting the needs of its customers.

Volotea, the airline of the small and medium sized cities of Europe, has won the Europes Leading Low-Cost Airline award at the 2021 World Travel Awards. The prestigious prize was announced on October 22nd.

“We are very proud to have won with such broad competition in the low-cost category. It's a true recognition to what we do, specially coming from our own industry. Since we launched, we have managed to combine competitive low-cost prices with a good flight experience for our customers”, said Carlos Muñoz, CEO and co-founder of the airline.

It was Volotea’s first nomination in the category. The awards have been referred to as “the Oscars of the travel industry” by the Wall Street Journal and others and they were created in 1993 with the goal of recognizing and celebrating excellence in all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.

Volotea was founded in 2011, and since it has grown to over 1,350 staff employees with 17 bases across Europe, flying to over 100 destinations in 15 countries. In 2020, the company made a major upgrade to its fleet, which is made of 40 Airbus aircraft (A319/A320s), with more capacity, range and improved CO2 emissions.

The airline had been previously awarded with local awards in the markets where it operates among which it won the “Traveler’s choice best low-cost airline in Europe,” awarded by in 2017 by the leading global reviews leader Tripadvisor.

Volotea is becoming a full Airbus carrier in 2021, by renewing part of its fleet with aircraft from the European manufacturer. The airline, which had planned to perform this fleet unification in 2023, has advanced its plans in order to improve its cost base over the next 2-3 years and increase its network offering, with aircraft that have a higher capacity and a longer flying range.

The airline has operated a fleet of 40 aircraft in summer 2021 versus 36 in 2019. In terms of volume, Volotea and has increased its seat capacity by up to 111% compared to summer 2019.

Volotea employs over 1,350 staff across Europe and was the most active airline in Summer 2020 among its main competitors in activity, seat-load factor, operational levels and customer satisfaction.
