The capital of Saxony, Dresden, like many Germany cities, was rebuilt after the Second World War. But this in no way detracts from the charm of its old town, the Altstadt, which treats its visitors to some wonderful buildings and extremely photogenic spots.

The River Elba separates the old town from the modern one, with its beer halls and its vibrant array of food options and art. We would also advise you to explore the city’s surrounding areas, as not too far away you’ll find some amazing nature parks and sprawling vineyards.

One of Dresden’s main sights is the Frauenkirche (the Church of Our Lady), an 18^th century Lutheran church, destroyed in the 1945 bombings and completely rebuilt in the 1980s. The result of this restoration is astounding: this magnificent baroque building has returned to its original splendour. 

Also baroque in style is the Zwinger, an architectural complex consisting of a palace and gardens, now housing some major museums. Dresden Castle, built in various architectural styles, also hosts several museums. 

In the new town, we’d advise you to take a stroll through the student quarter of Kunsthofpassage; here you’ll find the popular Funnel Wall, where the façade of a large building is covered in drainpipes and guttering which play an intriguing tune when it rains.

The most beautiful views of the city can be enjoyed from Brühl's Terrace, also known as "the Balcony of Europe", a Renaissance-style terrace surrounded by peaceful gardens, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the River Elba. 

Finally, if you’re visiting Dresden at Christmastime, don’t miss its famous Christmas market, the Striezelmarkt, believed by many to be the country’s oldest.
