Barcelona, 10 of June. Volotea, the airline of Europe's medium-sized cities, announced today working with Bureau Veritas for the full audit of the four sections of its ‘Voloterra’ Sustainability Program: Business Model, Emissions Reduction, Green Transition, and Offsetting Goals. The company will share its environmental roadmap with Bureau Veritas and will become the first airline to have its sustainability commitments verified by this worldwide company.

‘Voloterra,’ Volotea's sustainable development program, is divided into four areas of action:

• Business model

Since its operations started, Volotea has only operated direct routes, thus avoiding layovers or connecting flights and enabling fuel saving and shorter flight times. The airline does not operate any flight that can be covered by train in less than 4 hours. Similarly, over 90% of its flights cannot be traveled by train or car in less than 6 hours. Volotea also plays a key role in European island connectivity with 65% of its routes flying to or from islands. Finally, the airline does not operate low occupancy flights, with its flights having an average occupancy rate of 90-95%.

• Emissions reduction:

In 2020, Volotea replaced all its Boeing B717 aircraft from its fleet with more efficient and clean Airbus 319-320s. Since the start of operations in 2012, Volotea has launched 50 initiatives to reduce fuel consumption of its aircraft, resulting in a reduction of more than 41% of CO2 emissions per passenger and kilometer. By 2030 the company plans to achieve a 50% reduction in emissions per passenger kilometer (compared with 2012).

• Green transition:

Since 2022 Volotea has started introducing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in its aircraft. The airline is working with manufacturers and industry to ensure that these fuels can be developed and introduced as quickly as possible. In addition, Volotea is participating in the long-term development of the first commercial electric aircraft.

• Offsetting:

Volotea is committed to offsetting 25% of its total CO2 emissions by 2025. The company is supporting a series of CDM (United Nations Clean Development Mechanism) certified projects. It is also offering its customers the opportunity to support its carbon offsetting efforts via a voluntary €2 contribution per flight. The amount raised with donations will be invested in verified and certified offsetting projects with the strictest international standards.
